Is Your Mindset Holding You Back? How to Overcome Your Limiting Beliefs

Your beliefs around life, work, and even motherhood are influenced by a number of factors. Oftentimes, experiences that you had growing up or in previous jobs can impact how you see the world and what you think you’re capable of. These beliefs can either propel you forward or hold you back, and they go hand in hand with your mindset.

Let’s dive a little deeper into the origin of your beliefs, how they might be affecting your mindset and actions, and strategies for overcoming them if they’re keeping you from moving forward. We invite you to grab a notebook and a pen and spend a little time reflecting on your own beliefs and mindset.

First, let’s explore some different areas that limiting beliefs can show up in. Ask yourself if you hold onto any negative mindsets when it comes to the following, and feel free to jot down what those beliefs are:

  • Money - How do you view money in general? Do you believe that money can only be made in certain, maybe more traditional ways? Do you relate income to worth? Do you believe that the only way to make more money is to work harder/more hours?

  • Effort - Do you feel the need to work a certain number of hours a day to feel worthy? Do you feel like you need to “earn” your rest? Are you compelled to “balance” time for all the areas in your life?

  • Timing - Have you ever not done something because it “wasn’t the right time”? Do you wait for everything to be perfect before moving forward?

Now that you have a few beliefs of your own in mind, ask yourself the following:

  • Where does this belief come from? Was it ingrained in me when I was growing up? Has society told me it’s true? Was it born out of fear or as a coping mechanism?

  • How does this belief make me feel?

  • Is this belief preventing me from doing something or being someone I actually desire to be?

  • Where am I shrinking myself or not living in full expression of who I actually am?

  • Where am I looking at a situation with a fixed mindset instead of a growth mindset?

Awareness is an important first step in overcoming anything, including a belief that may be holding you back. Once you’re aware of your mindset and how it affects how you pursue opportunities or consider something that’s been on your heart, it’s important take action. What if instead of looking for the challenges, you looked for evidence of how something could work out in your favor? How could a mindset of abundance propel you forward in accomplishing your dreams, or even in just taking the first tiny step towards them?

Once you’ve given yourself some time and space to think about your own beliefs and mindset, we’d love to know - what is one thing you would do this upcoming year if you knew you could not fail? Send us a DM on Instagram @pursuingherpurpose and let us know what’s waiting for you!
