How to Niche Down

Determining a clear niche is arguably one of the biggest mistakes new business owners make – they don’t niche down enough. So if you’ve ever wondered if you need to get more clear on your niche OR maybe you aren’t seeing the results you want in your business, this blog post is for you.

So, let’s start at the basics here. A niche is a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service, and niching down is essentially a smaller category inside a broader category.

Here are a few symptoms you might be experiencing if you need to niche down more in your business:

  1. Audience growth is very slow

  2. You’re finding it difficult to make content and aren’t sure what to talk about

  3. You aren’t sure who is in your audience

  4. You don't have an Ideal Customer Avatar profile (or ICA), so if I asked you who do you serve, you couldn’t succinctly answer that in 2 sentences.

  5. You feel worried that you will exclude people

  6. You are working with people who suck your energy or aren’t people that you would consider “dream customers or clients”

If you are nodding your head at any of those, keep reading!

The following prompts are going to help you get super clear on your niche and who you serve. We would suggest pulling out a journal and spending some quality time thinking through these questions.

  1. What do you LOVE to do?

  2. What are you good at?

  3. What does the world need?

  4. What will people pay you for?

The intersection of those will be your “business niche”, and now let’s go a little further to niche down:

  1. Have you ever worked with a client or customer before who was a dream to work with? What was it about them that you enjoyed? If you haven’t, imagine them.

  2. Have you ever worked with a client or customer before who wasn’t a dream to work with? What about that experience sucked your energy? If you haven’t, imagine that experience.

  3. I want you to sit down and write out an elevator pitch on who this person is. Where do they live? What brands do they like? What is their age group? What are their hopes? What problems are they having? How long have they been having these problems?

Continue to get ultra specific until you’ve essentially created a profile for who that person is. Feel free to even give this person a name so that you can easily picture them when you are creating content.

Niching down is not only going to make your business more profitable, but it’s also going to make it easier for YOU to create content and find your dream customers.
